CHARLOTTESVILLE--The last time the Virginia football team ventured west of the Mississippi River, first-year head coach Mike London was the Cavaliers' defensive coordinator. Virginia was prepared for a quick start to the 2007 season against Wyoming....

Bears' effort finally paysoff
Wednesday, Dec 31, 1969 18:00
The Riverbend volleyball team entered its match against Massaponax last night with a record that misrepresented its talent. The Bears were 0-3, but those three losses had come to perhaps the three most storied volleyball programs in this area. Riverbend fell to Chancellor in five games, Courtland in four and Colonial Forge in three. And even though the final results were not what the Bears hoped for, the learning experiences were just what they needed....

Boise State builds its case
Wednesday, Dec 31, 1969 18:00
LANDOVER, Md.--It's tempting to ask what more Boise State needs to do. Wasn't Monday night's gripping 33-30 victory over 10th-ranked Virginia Tech at FedEx Field enough to convince whatever skeptics remain that the Broncos are legitimate? But the Broncos are used to having to prove themselves. And they're well aware that their low-profile league means they're held to a higher standard than their BCS conference brethren....

Wednesday, Dec 31, 1969 18:00
Coming into Saturday's Chancellor Invitational, Colonial Forge's boys and girls teams were already a favorite to win the Commonwealth District and Northwest Region, and contend in the state. Saturday's first-place sweep did nothing to hamper those thoughts as the Eagles finished ahead of top-ranked Midlothian in both races....

Opportunity lost to prove their worth
Wednesday, Dec 31, 1969 18:00
LANDOVER, Md.--Say this about the Virginia Tech Hokies: they don't quit. And the perserverance may serve them well in the weeks ahead. But the 10th-ranked Hokies missed a golden opportunity in last night's long-awaited showdown with No. 3 Boise State at FedEx Field. They made more special-teams errors than Frank Beamer wants in an entire season. They got manhandled at the line of scrimmage. They missed tackles....

Haynesworth will find role
Wednesday, Dec 31, 1969 18:00
ASHBURN--It took a moment yesterday to discern who the player and coach walking off the practice field together were. As the two men got closer to where media were standing at Redskins Park, reporters' intrigue was confirmed. Yes, it was coach Mike Shanahan and embattled defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth engaged in a lighthearted chat....

Randolph-Macon an area showcase
Wednesday, Dec 31, 1969 18:00
Nearly all of Randolph-Macon's points in its 54-14 season-opening romp over Methodist came from Fredericksburg-area players. Senior quarterback Austin Faulkner (Riverbend) threw three touchdown passes, and junior running back Thaddeus Scruggs (Massaponax) ran for three scores. Faulkner was 15-for-20 for 220 yards, and Scruggs gained 83 yards on 15 carries....

Wednesday, Dec 31, 1969 18:00
The Washington Redskins yesterday signed seven players whom they released on Saturday to their practice squad. Rookie offensive linemen Erik Cook and Selvish Capers, whom the Redskins drafted in April, were signed.
